Osmo products for exterior wood
Osmo exterior products can be used to protect and enhance decking, timber cladding, fencing, garden buildings, log cabins, pergolas, doors, windows and wooden garden furniture.
The range includes transparent and opaque wood finishes, decking oils, UV-protection oils, preservative base coats, cleaners and renovation products. The correct treatment depends on the timber species, construction, weather exposure and desired colour and appearance.
Exterior timber is always exposed to sunlight, rain, temperature changes, algae, dirt and natural greying. No finish makes outdoor wood completely maintenance-free. Inspect the surface regularly and carry out maintenance before the protection has worn away completely.
Osmo Decking Oil for decking and garden furniture
Osmo Decking Oil is designed for wooden decking, garden furniture and other horizontal or heavily weathered exterior timber surfaces.
It is available in different timber shades and grey colours. Pigmented versions generally provide greater resistance to colour change caused by sunlight than a completely clear oil. The natural grain and character of the timber remain visible.
Decking Oil creates a microporous finish that allows the timber to breathe. When the surface is correctly prepared and maintained, the finish will not crack, peel or flake in the same way as a closed paint or varnish layer can.
Always prepare a test area. Timber species, weathering, sanding and absorbency strongly influence the final colour.
Transparent protection with Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain
Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain is a transparent pigmented finish for timber cladding, fencing, garden buildings, pergolas, doors, windows and other exterior wooden structures.
The natural wood grain remains visible while the pigments add colour and UV resistance. Pale transparent colours provide less UV protection than darker or more heavily pigmented shades. On surfaces with strong sun exposure, select the product according to both colour and the required level of protection.
Natural Oil Woodstain contains active ingredients that help protect the dry coating against mould, algae and fungal attack. It does not guarantee protection against structural decay, wood-boring insects or unsuitable construction. Correct drainage, ventilation, detailing and timely maintenance remain essential.
Use this product outdoors only and always read the current label and safety information before use.
Opaque colour with Osmo Country Colour
Osmo Country Colour provides exterior wood with an opaque colour while allowing the character of the timber surface to remain recognisable.
It is suitable for cladding, fencing, garden buildings, balconies, windows, doors and decorative exterior timber. The extensive colour range can be used to refresh existing wood or create a completely new appearance.
Correct preparation remains important with opaque finishes. Remove loose, poorly adhering and unsuitable closed coatings before application. Always test the selected colour on the actual timber.
UV-Protection Oil for vertical surfaces
Osmo UV-Protection Oil is primarily intended for vertical exterior timber such as cladding, doors, windows, roof overhangs, fencing and garden buildings.
Clear and lightly pigmented versions help slow natural greying. On vertical surfaces, the clear version can considerably delay the greying process compared with untreated timber.
Clear UV-Protection Oil is not the preferred option for uncovered horizontal decking or garden furniture where rainwater can remain on the surface. For these applications, use a suitable pigmented Osmo Decking Oil. If a completely clear decking finish is still preferred, be aware that the timber will naturally grey and may require more frequent maintenance.
Preparing timber with Osmo WR Base Coat Aqua 4008
Osmo WR Base Coat Aqua 4008 is a clear, water-based preservative base coat for untreated exterior timber without direct ground or water contact.
It is used as a preparatory treatment and must be overcoated with a suitable Osmo exterior finish after drying. WR Base Coat Aqua is not a standalone final finish.
Always check whether a preservative base coat is required and permitted for the selected timber, construction and finishing system. Use biocidal products safely and read the label and product information before use.
Cleaning, restoring and renovating exterior wood
Clean exterior timber before applying a maintenance coat. Correct preparation prevents dirt, algae and loose old finish from becoming trapped beneath the new coating.
Depending on the condition of the surface, use:
-
Osmo Decking Cleaner 8025 for normal contamination on wooden decking
-
Osmo Gard Clean for green growth and similar exterior contamination
-
Osmo Wood Reviver Power Gel to refresh naturally greyed timber
-
Osmo Paint Remover Gel for removing compatible old oil and paint finishes
Allow the wood to dry completely after wet cleaning before applying a new finish. Check the moisture content and follow the drying instructions for the cleaner used.
Protecting end grain
The cut ends of timber absorb moisture much more readily than the longitudinal grain. Protect these vulnerable ends with Osmo End Grain Sealing Wax 5735.
End Grain Sealing Wax helps reduce moisture absorption and moisture loss through the cut ends. This can reduce excessive swelling, shrinkage and cracking. It cannot replace correct drainage, ventilation or construction detailing.
Apply with suitable brushes and rollers
Apply Osmo exterior finishes thinly and evenly in the direction of the grain. Work continuously and pay close attention to end grain, joints and connections.
Use the professional brushes, paint rollers, microfibre rollers and application materials shown as related products on the individual product pages. These tools have been selected to distribute oil and stain in a controlled, thin and even layer.
An unsuitable general-purpose roller or coarse brush may hold or release too much material. This can cause visible lines, differences in sheen, tacky areas and extended drying times.
