Osmo End Grain Sealing Wax 5735 has been developed specifically for sealing end grain and freshly cut exterior timber. Because of its open structure, end grain absorbs moisture considerably faster than the lengthwise surfaces of the wood. This can increase the risk of cracking, swelling, shrinkage and premature weathering.

The clear sealing wax reduces water absorption through exposed ends while also limiting excessive drying. It is partially absorbed into the wood through capillary action, supporting the protection of vulnerable cut ends from within.

Recommended applications

Use Osmo End Grain Sealing Wax on untreated or freshly cut ends of:

Suitable wood species include Bangkirai, Teak, Massaranduba, Garapa and Cumaru, as well as Pine, Spruce, Douglas Fir, Larch, Cedar and Thermowood.

Surface preparation

The end grain must be clean, dry and frost-free. Remove dirt, dust, loose wood fibres and any poorly adhering previous finishes. The moisture content of the wood should not exceed approximately 20%.

Stir thoroughly before use. Osmo End Grain Sealing Wax is supplied ready to use and should not be thinned. On unfamiliar wood species or existing finishes, always perform a trial application first.

How to apply Osmo End Grain Sealing Wax

Apply the wax generously and evenly to the exposed end grain with a suitable Osmo brush from the related products shown below this page. Work the product thoroughly into the open wood structure.

For highly absorbent end grain, two applications are recommended:

1. Apply two coats wet-on-wet, or;

2. Allow the first application to dry before applying a second coat.

Pay particular attention to freshly sawn ends, drilled holes, grooves and timber joints, as these areas are especially vulnerable to moisture absorption.

Coverage and drying time

One litre covers approximately 5 m² of end grain. Actual coverage will depend on the wood species, absorbency and surface structure.

Under normal conditions, the product requires approximately 3–4 hours to dry at 20–23°C and 50–65% relative humidity. Ensure good ventilation. Lower temperatures, higher humidity or insufficient ventilation can considerably extend the drying time.

Protect the treated timber from rain and moisture while it is drying.

Completing the exterior wood protection

End Grain Sealing Wax protects the exposed ends only and does not replace a finish on the remaining timber surface. Treat the lengthwise surfaces with a suitable Osmo exterior oil, decking oil, wood stain or exterior paint.

Finish the complete timber surface with the chosen coating and then seal the cut ends carefully with End Grain Sealing Wax 5735. Inspect these areas during routine exterior maintenance and reapply the wax when the protection has visibly deteriorated.
