Osmo Opaque Stain for exterior wood

Osmo Opaque Stain is a fast-drying, water-based and satin-matt wood finish for exterior use. The highly opaque finish protects wood against weathering and UV radiation while giving cladding, garden buildings, fences, garden furniture and other wooden components an even colour.

The finish is breathable and water-repellent. This allows moisture to escape from the wood and helps reduce swelling and shrinkage. Its microporous surface will not crack, peel or flake and can be easily recoated when maintenance is required.

Colours displayed on a screen may differ from the final result. The natural colour, grain and absorption of the wood can also affect the appearance. Always carry out a test application first.

Preparing the wood

The wood must be clean, dry and frost-free. Remove dust, grease, dirt, algae and loose wood fibres. The moisture content of the wood must not exceed 18%.

Thoroughly clean and lightly sand old finishes that are still sound. Damaged, loose or unsuitable coatings must be removed completely. Always wear suitable personal protection when sanding.

Many wood species contain natural, water-soluble extractives. Oils and resins found in oak, robinia and larch, among others, may affect adhesion and colour. Allow wood rich in natural extractives to weather when necessary and always complete a test application.

Using a primer with white and light colours

Osmo Primer 7000 White can be used as a base coat underneath white and light-coloured finishes. This white primer helps equalise the substrate and can improve the final opaque result.

Apply the primer before installation where possible if the back, edges and end grain also need to be treated. Allow the primer to dry completely before applying Osmo Opaque Stain.

Applying Osmo Opaque Stain

Osmo Opaque Stain is ready to use and must not be diluted. Stir thoroughly before and during application to keep the pigments and other ingredients evenly distributed.

Apply the first coat thinly and evenly in the direction of the wood grain. Work quickly and, where possible, treat each board or component along its full length to prevent visible overlaps.

Allow the first coat to dry for approximately 3–4 hours with good ventilation. If necessary, lightly sand the dry surface with a fine abrasive and carefully remove the sanding dust. Then apply a second thin and even coat.

Untreated wood normally requires two coats. When renovating a sound existing finish, one thin coat is usually sufficient.

Use our special brushes and paint rollers

Apply Osmo Opaque Stain with our special flat brush for paint and coatings or our special mini paint roller set.

Avoid using an unsuitable general-purpose roller or brush. A suitable paint roller or brush helps distribute the thin coats evenly and reduces the risk of streaks, overlaps, texture differences and localised excess product.

Coverage, coats and drying time

• Coverage: approximately 16 m² per litre per coat

Actual coverage depends on the wood species, surface structure, absorption and preparation. Rough-sawn or highly absorbent wood may require considerably more product. Lower temperatures and higher humidity will extend the drying time.

Storage and safe application

Store the product in its sealed original container in a cool, dry and frost-free place. Protect it from temperatures above 30 °C.

Keep out of reach of children. Ensure good ventilation during application and drying and always follow the safety instructions on the packaging.
