Osmo Oil Stain 3500 Series
Osmo Oil Stain is a professional pigmented base finish for evenly colouring interior wooden floors, parquet, stairs and furniture. It penetrates the timber while retaining the visible grain and natural character of the wood.
One extremely thin coat creates a transparent colour. Apply two very thin coats when a stronger, more intensive colour is required.
Important: Osmo Oil Stain is a coloured base coat and not a complete floor finish. Once completely dry, it must always be protected with a compatible clear or white-tinted Osmo Polyx-Oil topcoat.
Available colours
Select the required colour and container size above:

-
3512 Silver Grey: cool transparent or intensive grey

3514 Graphite: dark graphite-grey appearance
-
3516 Jatoba: warm reddish-brown wood tone

Colour samples are only a guide. Timber species, natural wood colour, pore structure, sanding and application amount all influence the final result. Always create a representative test area.
Transparent or intensive colour
Transparent result with one coat
Apply one extremely thin coat of Oil Stain and work it evenly into the wood with a white pad. The natural grain and colour variations remain clearly visible.
Coverage can reach approximately 48 m² per litre depending on the timber and sanding sequence.
Intensive result with two coats
For a stronger colour, apply a second very thin coat only after the first coat has dried completely. Work the second coat evenly into the surface with a white pad.
An intensive two-coat application reduces the visibility of the natural grain and uses more product.
Allow each colour coat to dry completely before applying another Oil Stain coat or the protective Polyx-Oil topcoat.

Surface preparation
The wood must be completely clean, dry, frost-free and free from dust, grease, wax and sealed coatings. The moisture content of the timber must not exceed 18%.
Completely remove old paint and lacquer. Fill small cracks, joints or damaged areas with a suitable wood filler where required.
Sand the complete surface extremely evenly. Differences in sanding will become more visible after applying a pigmented oil.
Use the following as a guide:
-
P100: stronger and more intensive colour
-
P120–P150: calmer and more harmonious colour
-
Furniture: approximately P120–P180
Sand borders, edges and difficult areas in exactly the same manner as the main surface. Carefully remove all sanding dust with a vacuum cleaner.
Always produce a test area using the complete proposed system, including the selected topcoat.
Use our professional application materials
Even application is essential when colouring an entire floor. Use the specialist microfibre rollers, floor brushes, hand-pad holders, white pads and floor machines displayed with the related products below.
An unsuitable roller, coarse brush or incorrect pad can create stripes, dark overlaps and visible colour differences.
For larger floors, we recommend mechanical application using a suitable single-disc machine and white pad. Smaller surfaces can be treated using a microfibre roller, floor brush, double-blade scraper, hand-pad holder or lint-free cloth.
Applying a transparent colour
Stir extremely thoroughly before and during use. Pigments settle during storage and must be redistributed completely.
Apply Osmo Oil Stain extremely thinly and evenly in the direction of the wood grain. Use one of our specialist microfibre rollers, floor brushes, scrapers or applicator pads.
Immediately work the stain evenly into the timber with a white pad. Work wet-on-wet and avoid overlaps, puddles and partially dried edges.
Brush marks can be removed within approximately 30 minutes using a clean microfibre roller.
Allow the colour coat to dry for approximately 12 hours with good ventilation.
Applying an intensive colour
For a stronger colour, apply a second very thin Oil Stain coat only after the first coat has dried completely.
Spread the second coat evenly and work it into the surface with a white pad. Confirm that the first coat is fully dry and colourfast. An insufficiently dried first coat may be disturbed or pulled away during the second application.
Allow the second colour coat to dry for approximately 12 hours before applying the protective topcoat.
Mandatory protective topcoat
After complete drying, Osmo Oil Stain must always be finished with one thin coat of a suitable Osmo Polyx-Oil. This topcoat protects the pigment against wear, dirt and moisture.
Suitable options include clear satin and semi-matt Polyx-Oils.
Always produce a test area on dark colours. A very matt clear topcoat can create a pale or powdery haze over black and other dark shades because of its matting agents. Osmo 3065 Clear Semi-Matt is often a safer option over dark colours than 3062 Clear Matt.
Important information for 3501 White
An intensive white floor is more sensitive to natural yellowing and visible wear. Do not automatically apply a standard clear topcoat over an intensive white finish.
For 3501 White, use a compatible white transparent topcoat such as Osmo Polyx-Oil Rapid 3240 White Transparent. This helps retain the light appearance and reduces the risk of the final coat making the white colour appear warmer or more yellow.
Important information for 3519 Natural
Osmo 3519 Natural contains light pigments that help reduce the permanent wet-look effect normally caused by clear oil. This keeps light-coloured timber visually closer to its untreated appearance.
Apply 3519 extremely thinly. On dark or reddish timber, its light pigments may appear as white streaks or a chalky haze. Use this colour mainly on light wood species and always complete a test area.
After drying, 3519 Natural must also be protected with a compatible clear Polyx-Oil.
Hardener for Oil Stain
For professional or time-sensitive projects, Osmo Hardener for Oil Stain 6631 can be added. Under suitable conditions, this can reduce drying time from approximately 12 hours to around four hours.
Use only the specified mixing ratio and apply the mixed product within its stated working time. Never mix more material than can be applied during that period.
Drying and curing
Without hardener, allow approximately 12 hours of drying time for each colour coat. Low temperatures, high humidity, inadequate ventilation and excessive application will extend the drying time.
Do not apply the topcoat until the Oil Stain is completely dry and stable.
After the final Polyx-Oil coat has been applied, allow approximately two to three weeks for the complete system to cure fully. Treat the floor carefully during this period and avoid rugs or other non-breathable coverings.
Coverage
Approximate coverage:
-
Transparent application: up to approximately 48 m² per litre with one extremely thin coat
-
Intensive application: approximately 24 m² per litre per coat, depending on timber and application
Rough, absorbent or coarsely sanded timber will use more product. Never apply additional stain merely to increase consumption; excessive product causes uneven colour and delays drying.
Cleaning and maintenance
Regularly remove sand and loose dirt with a soft broom, dust mop or vacuum cleaner. Use our Eco Multi Cleaner for normal weekly hygienic cleaning. Always use a well-wrung mop and never leave puddles on the floor.
Use Wisch-Fix separately when the oil and wax finish requires additional care. Wisch-Fix does not replace normal hygienic cleaning.
When the protective topcoat becomes locally worn, clean and repair the finish before the coloured pigment is exposed to direct wear.

Important safety information
Provide sufficient ventilation during application and drying. Keep the product out of the reach of children and follow the safety instructions on the container.
Cloths, pads and application materials containing liquid oil residue can generate heat and self-ignite. Immediately spread used materials outside to dry completely or store them under water inside a sealed metal container.
