Osmo coloured Polyx-Oil for wooden floors and furniture

Osmo coloured Polyx-Oil adds a transparent shade to bare or completely sanded timber while also forming part of its protective finish. The pigments alter the appearance of the wood without completely hiding its natural grain.

The final colour is always influenced by the timber species, original wood tone, sanding method and amount applied. One colour can therefore look noticeably different on oak, pine, beech or another type of wood.

Always prepare a trial area on an offcut or inconspicuous section. Allow the sample to dry completely and assess it in both daylight and artificial light before treating the complete surface.

Available colour effects

Depending on current availability and container size, the range includes:

• 3040 White Transparent: a light whitewashed effect with visible wood grain

• 3041 Natural: designed to retain the pale character of untreated timber

• 3044 Raw: produces a calm, almost untreated appearance on light wood

• 3067 Light Grey: a transparent pale grey shade

• 3071 Honey: a warm, golden tone

• 3072 Amber: a fuller warm amber colour

• 3073 Terra: a warm earthy shade

• 3074 Graphite: a dark transparent grey

• 3075 Black: a transparent black effect that keeps the wood structure visible

Select the required colour and container size above. Screen images and colour samples only provide an indication. The true result can only be judged on the actual timber.

Suitable applications

Coloured Polyx-Oil can be used indoors on:

• Solid wood and plank floors

• Parquet and engineered flooring with a suitable real-wood top layer

• Wooden stairs and landings

• Furniture and interior woodwork

• OSB and suitable cork surfaces

• New timber and existing surfaces that have been completely sanded back

Transparent shades generally show most clearly on pale timber. Dark, reddish or strongly discoloured wood may produce a substantially different result.

Exotic and extractive-rich species may require a different type of oil. Always test the penetration, colour and drying behaviour before beginning the complete project.

Choosing the correct two-coat system

The first pigmented coat creates the colour, but the complete system must also provide sufficient protection. The correct finishing coat depends on the selected shade and desired appearance.

3040 White Transparent

Apply 3040 in a very thin and even coat. Use 3040 White Transparent for the second coat as well when the white appearance must be retained. A standard clear finishing coat can make the timber appear warmer or yellower and may reduce the intended whitewashed effect.

3041 Natural and 3044 Raw

3041 Natural and 3044 Raw always require two thin coats of Polyx-Oil to produce a strong and complete protective treatment.

Depending on the preferred appearance, the second coat can be the same product. Where a more subtle pale effect is required, a compatible clear Polyx-Oil can be used as the second coat after a successful trial application.

A second coat of the same version may strengthen its pale or slightly white-pigmented character. Prepare a sample and decide on the final coat only after the first one has dried completely.

Light Grey, Honey, Amber, Terra, Graphite and Black

On a wooden floor, normally apply one very thin coat of the chosen colour. Allow it to dry fully and follow it with a suitable clear Polyx-Oil as the protective finishing coat.

Do not apply several pigmented coats without first testing the result. A second colour coat can make the finish considerably stronger, less transparent and potentially uneven across a large floor.

A deeper colour may occasionally be selected deliberately for furniture or decorative woodwork. Always confirm the result with a trial application.

Preparing the timber

The wood must be clean, dry and evenly sanded. Completely remove lacquers, paints and other closed coatings. An existing oil treatment may only remain when it is clean, stable and compatible with the new finish.

Repair open joints and damage before carrying out the final sanding stage. Remove all sanding dust with a powerful vacuum cleaner.

Inconsistent sanding almost always causes colour variation. Areas sanded to different grades absorb different quantities of pigment. Use the same final sanding grade across the complete surface.

As a practical guideline, wooden flooring can normally be finished at approximately P120–P150. Avoid sanding excessively fine, as tightly polished timber may absorb less product and remain visibly paler.

Wood moisture must not exceed 18%. Work at a normal room temperature and provide continuous ventilation.

Applying coloured Polyx-Oil

Stir the product extremely thoroughly before and during application. Pigments can settle at the bottom of the container. Inadequate stirring can create visible colour differences even when the material comes from the same tin.

Apply an extremely thin coat in the direction of the grain. We recommend using the professional rollers, oil applicators, brushes or pads shown as related products at the bottom of this page.

Our application materials are selected to spread oil evenly and in a controlled film. An unsuitable general-purpose roller may leave too much product behind, resulting in lap marks, colour variation or very slow drying.

Follow a consistent working pattern and complete each section without interruption. Correct overlaps, pools and darker patches immediately while the product can still be redistributed.

Coloured Polyx-Oil must not remain as a thick wet layer on the timber. Applying more material does not automatically create a better or stronger colour.

Machine application

On larger wooden floors, a suitable polishing machine and pad can be used to distribute the coloured coat. Apply only a limited amount and polish it evenly until no wet oil or local build-up remains.

Work in manageable sections and inspect the floor continuously from several directions. Finish edges and corners with suitable hand tools.

Machine application requires experience. Prepare a generously sized trial area or contact us for advice if you are uncertain about the method.

Drying and applying the finishing coat

Allow every coat to dry completely before continuing. A pigmented oil normally requires more drying time than a clear treatment. Under normal conditions, allow approximately 24 hours for a coloured coat.

Low temperatures, high humidity, restricted ventilation or heavy application can increase the drying time substantially.

Only apply the second coat when the first is dry throughout and no longer feels tacky. Do not cover the surface with plastic sheeting, cardboard or rugs while it is drying and curing.

The complete treatment requires approximately two to three weeks to cure fully. Use the floor carefully during this period and remove spilled liquids immediately.

Coverage

The estimated coverage is approximately 30 m² per litre per coat on smooth and correctly prepared timber.

Actual consumption depends on:

• Timber species and absorbency

• Quality of sanding

• Surface texture

• Selected colour

• Application tools

• Applied film thickness

Rough, strongly absorbent or structured wood will normally require more material.

Cleaning and maintenance

Regularly remove grit and loose dirt with a soft broom or vacuum cleaner. For normal weekly cleaning, use our Eco Multi Cleaner and clean wooden floors with a well-wrung, damp mop rather than excessive water.

A suitable maintenance product can be used periodically according to the colour and sheen. Always test maintenance products on an inconspicuous area of a coloured floor first.

Do not wait until wear has exposed bare timber. Timely local maintenance can prevent a much larger renovation.

Safety information

Cloths, pads and other absorbent materials containing liquid oil can generate heat and ignite. Spread used materials out completely and allow them to dry in a safe location, or store them in a sealed metal container in accordance with the safety instructions.
