Osmo Wood Wax Finish Clear Extra Thin 1101

Osmo Wood Wax Finish Clear Extra Thin 1101 is a thin, clear oil-wax finish developed for tropical, oily and extractive-rich timber species.

Conventional hardwax oils can have difficulty penetrating or drying on these timbers. The thinner formulation of 1101 penetrates dense wood more effectively and helps prevent a tacky surface, delayed drying and poor adhesion.

The product creates a clear satin finish and intensifies the natural colour and grain of the timber, producing a warmer and richer appearance.

The amount of natural oil, resin and extractives differs between timber species. Always complete a test area to check the colour, absorption and drying behaviour.

For normally absorbent European timbers without a high natural oil or resin content, a standard Osmo Polyx-Oil will usually be more appropriate.

The finish is water and dirt resistant and can be used in interior rooms exposed to increased humidity. It is not intended for exterior wood.

Difference from standard Polyx-Oil

Standard Polyx-Oil is designed for normally absorbent timber. Tropical hardwoods often contain high levels of natural oil, resin or other extractives and commonly have a very dense structure.

A standard hardwax oil may therefore be unable to penetrate sufficiently. This can result in an unevenly dried or permanently tacky surface.

Osmo 1101 is considerably thinner and is designed to penetrate these difficult, less absorbent wood species. Do not automatically apply a standard Polyx-Oil to teak, merbau, wenge or similar exotic timber.

Surface preparation

The wood must be clean, dry, frost-free and free from dust, grease, silicone, wax and sealed coatings. The moisture content of the timber must not exceed 18%.

Completely remove old paint and lacquer. Thoroughly clean existing microporous oil finishes. Fill small cracks or damaged areas with a suitable wood filler where required.

Sand the wood carefully and evenly:

• Wooden floors: finish at approximately P120–P150

• Furniture and fine joinery: finish at approximately P180–P240

• Worktops: select a consistent sanding sequence suitable for the timber

Remove all sanding dust with a vacuum cleaner and soft dust cloth.

Where possible, treat end grain and inaccessible sides of separate timber components before installation.

Applying Osmo 1101

Stir thoroughly before and during use. Do not thin.

Apply the first coat thinly and evenly in the direction of the wood grain. Use one of our professional brushes, floor brushes, microfibre rollers or lint-free cotton cloths displayed with the related products below.

Allow the product to penetrate for approximately 30 minutes. Apply a little more product to areas that absorb the finish rapidly during this period.

After approximately 30 minutes, remove all oil that has not penetrated using a clean, lint-free cotton cloth. No wet or heavy film may remain on the surface.

Allow the first coat to dry for approximately 12 hours with good ventilation.

Number of coats

Use the following as a guide:

• Wooden floors and worktops: two very thin coats

• Furniture and wall panelling: one thin coat may be sufficient

• Heavily used furniture: apply a second thin coat where necessary

• Renovation: normally one thin coat on the completely clean and dry surface

Apply the second coat using the same method. Allow it to penetrate for approximately 30 minutes and once again remove all excess oil.

Applying more material does not provide better protection. Excess product delays drying and can create a tacky surface.

Use our brushes and cotton cloths

Osmo 1101 must be applied thinly and all excess oil must be removed.

Use the professional brushes, flooring brushes and lint-free cotton cloths selected below this product. A coarse general-purpose brush or lint-producing cloth can leave marks and fibres in the finish.

For furniture and smaller areas, use a suitable flat brush or lint-free cloth.

Drying and curing

Allow approximately 12 hours of drying time per coat under normal conditions. Provide good ventilation throughout drying.

Low temperatures, high humidity, insufficient ventilation or excessive application can considerably extend drying time.

The finish takes approximately two to three weeks to cure completely. Treat the surface carefully during this period and do not cover it with plastic, rugs or other non-breathable materials.

Coverage

One litre of Osmo Wood Wax Finish Clear Extra Thin covers approximately 24 m² of smooth, sanded timber with one thin coat.

Actual coverage depends strongly on the timber species, absorption, surface texture and sanding. Very dense tropical timber normally absorbs only a small amount. Always remove any product that has not penetrated after approximately 30 minutes.

Natural colour enhancement

Although Osmo 1101 is clear, oils intensify the natural colour of timber. This is commonly known as the permanent wet-look effect.

Light timber will usually appear warmer and darker. Dark tropical hardwoods often develop a deeper and richer appearance. Always produce a test area to ensure this effect matches the required result.

Cabinet interiors and drawers

Apply a maximum of one extremely thin cloth coat inside enclosed cabinets and drawers. Remove all excess oil and provide extended ventilation before closing or using the cabinet.

Cleaning and maintenance

Regularly remove dust and loose dirt with a soft cloth, broom or vacuum cleaner.

Use our Eco Multi Cleaner for normal weekly hygienic cleaning. Damp-clean wooden floors using a well-wrung mop and never leave puddles. For furniture and worktops, preferably spray the cleaner onto a cloth.

Wisch-Fix can be used separately when the oil and wax finish requires additional care. It does not replace normal hygienic cleaning.

When the surface begins to look dull or dry, clean it carefully, allow it to dry completely and apply one extremely thin maintenance coat of Osmo 1101.

Important safety information

Provide sufficient ventilation during application and drying. Keep the product out of the reach of children and follow the safety instructions on the container.

Cloths, pads and other materials containing liquid oil residue can generate heat and self-ignite. Immediately spread used materials outside to dry completely or store them under water inside a sealed metal container.
